Reverend Dr. Richard N. Hughes

Rev. Dr. Richard N. Hughes is a passionate preacher, visionary leader, and community-minded pastor currently serving as the Senior Pastor of New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Known for his thoughtful theology and relevant preaching, Dr. Hughes brings a bold and compassionate voice to the pulpit, challenging congregations to live out their faith with purpose and conviction. Licensed to preach at the age of 11 at Marblecreek Missionary Baptist Church in Nicholasville, Kentucky, and ordained at 24, Dr. Hughes has dedicated his life to ministry and spiritual and community leadership. His favorite scripture, Luke 4:18, grounds his preaching and ministry philosophy—proclaiming good news to the poor, liberation to the oppressed, and hope to the brokenhearted.

Dr. Hughes holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Simmons College of Kentucky, a Master of Divinity from Wake Forest University, and a Doctor of Ministry from Payne Theological Seminary. These academic pursuits reflect his deep commitment to theological integrity, cultural engagement, and holistic ministry.

At New Jerusalem, Dr. Hughes is leading a season of innovation and renewal—revitalizing Christian education through hybrid models, expanding leadership development efforts, and reimagining the church’s role in the wider community. He is especially passionate about bridging the gap between the Black Church and the Black institutions that are vital to the flourishing of the Black community. His ministry centers on building strong partnerships that advance education, health, economic development, and cultural preservation—all rooted in a deep faith in God.

He is the devoted husband of Dr. Otteria Miller Hughes, and together they are the proud parents of their two sons, Braxton and Wesley.

Wherever he goes, Dr. Hughes brings a word that is both timely and timeless, calling the Church to live out the Gospel with courage, creativity, and compassion.
